On Thursday 5 December, 18.00, the NIA has the pleasure of hosting a lecture by dr. Dimitris Kountouras (Athens Conservatory, Ionian University)
“Musical themes and instruments in the world of Hieronymus Bosch, diving into 15th century arts and culture in the Low Countries”
In this lecture, dr. Kountouras will address the symbolism of music in Bosch’s work and during his time, and the way in which the famous painter used musical instruments in his works.
By having a closer look at Bosch’ major works, the speaker will try to give us an interpretation of the musical themes and allegories through the perception of the arts and esthetics of Bosch’ era.
The lecture is not addressed to specialists on music but rather to a public with curiosity and interest in the works of the great painter of the Low Countries.

Dimitris Kountouras is a performer on early flutes, a scholar and teacher focusing on Early Music. He studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts graduating with a masters in performance and later continued his studies in Milan, Vienna and Trossingen.
He is teaching at the Ionian University and co-ordinates the Centre for Early Music at the Athens Conservatoire. He recorded many CDs with his ensemble Ex Silentio and published articles and essays on music history for Brepols, Nefeli, Fagottobooks and Orpheus. He also performed with Armonia Atenea, Harmony of Nations Baroque Orchestra and Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
