Nu Online: Boekpresentatie ‘Making the Modern Turkish Citizen: Vernacular Photography in the Early Republican Era’ door de auteur Özge Calafato (Universiteit van Amsterdam)

The recording of the book presentation of ‘Making the Modern Turkish Citizen: Vernacular Photography in the Early Republican Era’ is now available on the YouTube-channel of our Institute.

This event was organized in the framework of the NIA Library’s activities and it was a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute at Athens, the Nordic Library at Athens and the Finnish Institute at Athens. The book presentation took place on Wednesday October 22nd, 2025 at the FIA’s premises.

After the brief introductions by the NIA Librarian, Ms. Sotiria Nikolou, and the Director of the Finnish Institute at Athens, Dr. Petra Pakkanen, the author, Özge Calafato, presented the book. The book focuses on photographic documents, which describe the making of the modern Turkish citizens’ identity in the 1920s and 1930s. The attendees very much enjoyed the presentation, and they even shared their perspectives regarding the history of the photographic documents.
