Proposals are invited for a two-day, interdisciplinary conference to be held at the Netherlands Institute, Athens, Greece, May 7-8, 2026, on textile production and representation from the premodern period to the present.
Contributions on historical and contemporary textile production, from harvesting materials (i.e. wool, linen, wood fiber, recycled materials, plastics), to processing, creation and design are welcome, as well as proposals that address uses of textiles and how they circulate through private or domestic economies, industry, and markets.
Contributions on the above topics and their representation in various media, from painting and sculpture to literature and film, to the use of textiles in political activism, are also welcome. In taking an interdisciplinary approach to textiles and allowing for extended historical perspectives on their production, our goal is to foster discussion that brings to light new connections between modes of production and ways of thinking about them at various junctures over several centuries.

Proposals can be submitted to Joyce Goggin (University of Amsterdam) by email.
