Συνέδριο “Perspectives on Rural Economics and Ecologies: Past, Present and Future” (21-23 Μαΐου 2025)

We are happy to announce the Conference “Perspectives on Rural Economies and Ecologies: Past, Present and Future”, which will take place from 21-23 May at the Netherlands Institute at Athens.
The conference is organized by Dr. Joyce Goggin (University of Amsterdam) in the framework of her NWIB-Visiting Professorship in cooperation with the NIA and ASCA, the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis of the University of Amsterdam.

This interdisciplinary conference will address topics related to our understanding of the rural as not outside, but rather entangled with, globalization from the outset. Speakers will address how, in specific rural communities, gender and class relations as well as notions of nationhood are refracted under conditions of industrialization and financialization, along with the environmental impact of these conditions.

The conference, which features keynote lectures by Prof. Esther Peeren (University of Amsterdam) and Prof. Clare Brant (Kings College, London), will also be concerned with the history of rural places and their globalization as well as with more recent developments such as rural gentrification and (over)tourism in various media including film, TV and literature.
