Conference Poster

We are very pleased to announce the international conference

‘A Towering Hinterland: The Case of Medieval Chalkida’

which will present the first results from a joint Dutch/Greek/International research initiative titled the ‘Hinterland of Medieval Chalkida Project’ (2021-2025) on the island of Euboea/Evia*.

This project studies the material culture and the network of Medieval monuments (such as towers) alongside the socio-economic transformations of the hinterland of the economically and politically important town of Chalcis/Euripos/Negroponte/Eğriboz from Byzantine to Ottoman times.

Its key research aims are to gain insight into long-term changes in habitation, land use, and water systems, as well as the region’s environmental evolution, military organisation, and socio-economic structure. Additionally, the project focuses on the area’s wider commercial and industrial links, as the hinterland of Chalkida remained a crucial hub in the Aegean maritime network under Byzantine, Latin/Venetian and Ottoman rule.

The conference, with sessions in both Athens (at the NIA, on 12 and 13 November) and Chalkida (at the Conference Centre, on 14 November), features a range of international specialists who will discuss their contributions to the project and the new light it sheds on the material culture and long-term history of the hinterland of Medieval Chalkida and Evia at large.

In order to reserve a seat for the sessions that will take place in Athens, please contact us by email.
